Rattling Spears wins 2017 AAANZ Book Prize

Rattling Spears: A History of Indigenous Australian Art by Ian McLean has won the 2017 AAANZ book prize.

Awarded by the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand, the annual prize recognises the best in arts writing and research across Australia and New Zealand.

The AAANZ awards cover a broad array of arts publishing and acknowledge the contribution of both emerging and established scholars and artists. The categories include prizes for books, catalogues, artist books, Indigenous art writing, and an award for recently completed PhD graduates.

In Rattling Spears, Ian McLean explores how Indigenous Australian art became the most successful Indigenous art in the world, and how its artists became players in an art world from which they had been barred. Finely illustrated, this full historical account makes you question everything you were taught about modern and contemporary art.
